Session 7 -- Hannah: Prayer

$ 17.00

The books of Samuel begin with the story of Hannah. Hannah lived in Ramah with her husband, Elkanah, and his other wife, Penninah. Though Hannah was the favored wife of Elkanah, she had no children because Yahweh has “closed her womb.” But, Peninnah had many children. She teased and tormented Hannah which caused her great distress and anguish. After an intense period of prayer, Hannah conceived and gave birth to Samuel whom she dedicated to God for life-long service in the temple.

Hannah is one of three women in the Bible who has a psalm officially attributed to her. The other two women are Miriam and Mary mother of Jesus (Miriam’s Song – Exodus 15: 19-21; Mary’s Magnificat – Luke 1: 46-55). Hannah’s song is considered to be a precursor to the Magnificat of Mary.

Hannah was a woman who strived to maintain an active prayer life and relationship with God through times of great pain and distress as well as times of tremendous joy. Through faithful exploration of the biblical narrative it is our task to unearth the life and story of this biblical woman. We meet Hannah as we bridge the generations and discover that we women today share similar stories and experiences of prayer.
